Planned Giving
By factoring in a donor’s personal tax, financial, and estate circumstances and goals, a planned gift provides maximum tax benefits to you, while making a significant difference to Angel Flight Southeast. Planned gifts can be made during your lifetime, or posthumously. If you are interested in discussing a possible planned gift, please contact us at (800) 352-4256.
Bequests: By including a bequest provision in your will or irrevocable trust, you can direct assets to Angel Flight Southeast. You still own and control the specified assets during your lifetime and you can modify the bequest at any time.
Pooled Income Fund: Much like a mutual fund, by directing cash or securities to a Pooled Income Fund established by Angel Flight Southeast, you or whomever you designate will receive ownership units in the fund that produces annual income for life. The income typically exceeds average returns on stock portfolios and it allows you to donate appreciated securities without paying capital gains taxes. At the time of the death of the unit holder, the principal attributed to that unit holder will pass to Angel Flight Southeast.
Charitable Gift Annuity: By giving cash or securities to Angel Flight Southeast now through a Charitable Gift Annuity, you can set up a fixed income for life for you or up to two individuals. The full amount of the cash or securities passes to Angel Flight Southeast, allowing you to take an immediate tax deduction for a portion of your gift, and your annuity payments are made from the investment income generated by your gift. You can defer taking receipt of your annuity payments until a specified future date, and the longer you defer, the higher the effective rate of your annuity. Annuity payments are subject to a variety of different tax treatments, so it is important to consult your tax advisor before making your gift.
Charitable Lead Trust: By contributing cash, securities or real property to a trust that makes fixed annual payments to Angel Flight Southeast, you can make a significant contribution to Angel Flight Southeast and still pass on these assets to your heirs. When the trust ends, the assets pass on to your heirs. You can specify the amount of the annual payment and the length of the trust, and all asset appreciation within the trust will ultimately pass to your heirs, tax-free.
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust: Contribute cash, securities or real property to a trust that makes fixed annual payments to you or whomever you designate. This provides a stable source of income for years, an immediate tax deduction for the assets you donate to the trust, and exemption from capital gains taxes on any appreciated assets that you donate to the trust.
Charitable Remainder Unit Trusts: Contribute cash, securities or real property to a trust that annually pays a percentage of the market value of the assets in the trust to whomever you designate. The assets are re-valued every year. At the end of the trust, the assets in the trust pass to Angel Flight Southeast. This provides a stable source of income for years, an immediate tax deduction for the assets you donate to the trust, and exemption from capital gains taxes on any appreciated assets that you donate to the trust.
Retained Life Estates: You transfer your home to Angel Flight Southeast as part of a Life Estate. You determine the length of the Life Estate and you continue to live in the home for the duration of the Life Estate. At the conclusion of the Life Estate, the home will pass to Angel Flight Southeast. You will receive an immediate tax deduction for a portion of the appraised value of the home and you can terminate the Life Estate early for an additional tax deduction. (You remain responsible for all applicable taxes and maintenance while you live in the home.)
You may be able to donate money from your IRA directly to Angel Flight Southeast without paying any penalty or taxes on that money. This means that the donation money is completely excluded from your taxable income. Be sure to consult your tax advisor for details.
Airplane Donation | Tax Deductible
In the United States, charitable giving to qualified non-profit organizations has long been encouraged by the federal government. The IRS encourages financial support of these organizations. Angel Flight Southeast qualifies as such an entity, under IRS Code 501 (c)(3) and the IRS has continued our designation of this approval since 1983.

Why should I donate my vessel to Angel Flight Southeast?
Because we are one of the few non-profits that can legitimately use your airplane in actual flights in compliance with FAA standards by encapsulating it in a flying club. Volunteer pilot members will incur 100% of the hourly cost of the flight, but that hourly cost is greatly reduced by free maintenance by a member, hangar cost donated, reduced fuel prices, etc.
The term “significant intervening use” is an important consideration in choosing the right non-profit for your donation. In that regard, according to the IRS: “Section 7.01 (1) of Notice 2005-44, 2005-1 C.B. 1287, states that to constitute a significant intervening use, a donee organization must actually use the qualified vehicle to substantially further the organization’s regularly conducted activities, and the use must be significant. Incidental use by an organization is not a significant intervening use. Whether a use is significant intervening use depends on its nature, extent, frequency, and duration.” Be careful of organizations that would use a lease/purchase gimmick to satisfy the meaning of “significant intervening use.”
Detailed Donation Instructions:
To start the airplane donation process, contact Angel Flight Southeast at (800) 352-4256. If you email us, please write to info@mercymail.org. We are open from 8 to 4, Monday thru Friday. If calling at another time or emailing, please remember to leave your phone number.
During our initial phone conversation, we will ask about the make/model/year location and overall condition of your airplane. It is very helpful to have your airworthiness, log books or registration handy-which contains useful information. We will give you general information about the tax donation procedure. Because there have been many changes over the recent years in the process of donating a vehicle, it is best discussed on a case by case basis. In addition, we urge all prospective donors to consult with their tax accounts or advisors before making any donation that they plan to take as a charitable contribution.
Next, an employee of Angel Flight Southeast will contact you to set up an appointment to look at the vessel to determine the suitability of the aircraft to either, use it in its mission-ready fleet or put it in its “for sale” program. The proceeds of the vessel sale go directly back into the medical/humanitarian flight programs. For those of you that are out of state and wish to donate your aircraft, Angel Flight Southeast generally will send a local representative to examine your aircraft. This is rather easy for us, as we have pilot and mechanics throughout the USA.
- Once you decide to donate your aircraft, we will provide you with the appropriate paperwork and IRS forms.
- Arrangements will then be made for delivery and transfer of ownership. We will pick up your aircraft, or hire a pilot at no expense to you. Or if you choose, you may want to deliver your aircraft yourself to the our hangar. Transfer of ownership is simple, whether the vessel is titled, registered or documented.
Donor Privacy Policy:
Angel Flight Southeast will not sell, trade or share a donor’s personal information with anyone else, nor send donor mailings on behalf of other organizations. Angel Flight Southeast collects and uses personal information such as: name, address, and phone number for the sole purpose of filing the required IRS forms that must be completed for donors of both boats and equipment.
Employee matching and payroll deduction
Many companies not only encourage their employees to give to and volunteer time to nonprofits in their communities, but also will match those efforts with dollars and other means of support.
Workplace giving contributes an estimated $5 billion to U.S. charities each year. If any of our pilots, board members, volunteers or supporters work for companies with a workplace giving program, this can be an additional source of funding. Please note, you have to ask. Our nonprofit’s access to these programs often must be initiated by an employee.
Workplace giving programs can be set up in a variety of ways. Some of the more popular workplace giving programs offered by corporations are:
- Employee Matching Gifts
- Donations through Payroll Deduction
Employee Matching Gifts are donations an employer makes to match its employees’ charitable contributions. Usually associated with corporate grantmakers, employee matching gifts often are dollar-for-dollar, but some companies will give double or even triple the original donation. Some may also give matching gifts for employees’ volunteer efforts. For example, when an employee participates in a walkathon or other type of fundraising event, their employer may match the money they raise through sponsorships or other donations.
Guidelines and amounts vary with each company. Typically, individuals must submit forms to their employers. They usually can get more information about their matching gift benefits from their human resources department.
To find companies that match their employees’ gifts, use Foundation Directory Online, our searchable grantmakers database, selecting a Transaction Type search for “Matching grants.”
Donations through Payroll Deductions can also be set up for employees who wish to effortlessly donate to a worthy cause.
